APRIL 21 ALC MEETING RECAP:

Saturday morning, April 21:

The ALC met Saturday morning at the Raley Hall Faculty Lounge for a short business meeting and to review the nominations for the upcoming ALC class.  University Provost Dr. Stanley Aeschleman then gave an in-depth presentation on the profile and funding model for the University.  His presentation was a real eye-opener about how the State of NC and UNC General Administration fund each of the 16 UNC System campuses. If you have any questions, you can email him at aeschlemansa@appstate.edu.

After a short break and a shopping stop at the University Bookstore, the members arrived at the new Belk Library atrium (complete with many bags filled with souvenirs) for the trip up to Room 421 high atop the library.  ASU Head Football Coach Jerry Moore and three players from the 2006 National Championship team - Brian Stokes, Cam Speer and Hans Batichon - joined us for lunch.  Coach Moore talked about his players and gave us a brief update about the upcoming season.  We then had a great opportunity to talk with the players and ask them questions.  You can see why Coach Moore and the entire University community are so proud of this team as they are fine young men who represent themselves and their University well.  They can also play some football!

Associate Vice Chancellor Harry Williams then discussed the Admissions Office and their record number of applications for the upcoming freshman class.  His powerpoint presentation may be viewed here.

Professor Rennie Brantz then addressed the group on the new Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies.  He talked about the great work this center provides for teachers in NC, across the country and around the world. They come to Boone every summer to become better teachers on the Holocaust.  This is another wonderful outreach program provided by Appalachian to the community.

The meeting adjourned about 3:30 p.m.  Some of the ALC members then stayed to attend the Spring Alumni Awards Banquet at the Broyhill Inn.

Thanks again to all the ALC members who participated in the Spring 2007 meeting! We look forward to seeing you all again in the fall, if not sooner!

THANK YOU!

Thanks to all of the ALC members for how you contribute your time and talents for the betterment of Appalachian State University.  All of us appreciate the efforts you make!  Please e-mail us at mcmahonvl@appstate.edu or  langdongm@appstate.edu with any thoughts or suggestions on how we can better serve you.

The group was treated to dinner on the top floor of the new Library and Information Commons. After supper, members had a few minutes to enjoy the new facility and the beautiful views of campus and Boone from the top floors. They also saw first-hand the rapid progress of the new parking deck located next to the Library on the former site of Whitener Hall.  This deck should open for use before Thanksgiving.

Saturday meetings and tailgate

The ALC met Saturday morning at the McKinney Alumni Center for breakfast and a short business meeting.  Current Alumni Council President Damien Carper ’97 addressed the members about legislative advocacy and how they can become a greater voice for Appalachian State in their community.  Damien also shared about a new e-mail plan for contacting legislators in Raleigh to push for greater State support to Appalachian especially since we rank at the bottom for Full Time Equivalent dollars. If interested in joining this e-mail list, please contact Rob Robertson in the Alumni Office at (828) 262-2203 or via e-mail at robertsonrw@appstate.edu.

After a group photo was taken on the Alumni Center patio the group heard from new Walker College of Business Dean Randy Edwards ’77, ’78. He shared news about the great things happening within the WCOB and introduced Russell Warriner, a student from the Holland Fellows Program. Warriner told the group about his experiences in China with the Holland Fellows Program directly followed by his internship with the China Daily newspaper.

The official meeting adjourned around 11 a.m. Many of the ALC members stopped by the tailgate tent. Congratulations to ALC member Randy Ross ’73 for winning the Jerry Moore signed Appalachian football! We then headed up to The Rock to the watch the Mountaineers defeat Mars Hill, 41-0. It was the first shut out in six years and the 20th consecutive win at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
