Thank you to all of the new and current ALC members who attended the Fall 2005 meeting in Boone October 27-28! We had a great turnout and, surprisingly, beautiful fall weather to enjoy.
We enjoyed a tour of the facility led by Curator Hank Foreman and a dinner and social time at the new TURCHIN CENTER FOR VISUAL ARTS.
Rob Robertson with the alumni office discussed the new ALUMNI ONLINE COMMUNITY and alumni office blog, What's hAPPening!
New Athletics Director Charlie Cobb shared his "Catch the Spirit" presentation about the exciting direction within Mountaineer athletics. He said he will make an important announcement regarding athletics at the November 12 football game, which is also College of Fine & Applied Arts Day at Kidd Brewer Stadium. All FAA graduates can receive discounted tickets for just $10! Visit www.faa.appstate.edu for more details.
Associate Librarian Dr. Larry Boyer, gave the group a tour of the new BELK LIBRARY & INFORMATION COMMONS and the members were absolutely amazed at the building and the beautiful views of campus and Boone from the top floors.
Kevin Wilcox provided the group with a presentation of how Appalachian students, faculty and staff have created a world-renown web publishing platform called PHP WEBSITE.
We took a GROUP PHOTO after lunch with the ASU Foundation Board of Directors.
After lunch, the ALC headed to the Holmes Convocation Center for an informative presentation from Susan Tumbleston, coordinator of the BE ACTIVE NORTH CAROLINA -APPALACHIAN PARTNERSHIP project housed on campus. We learned that maintaining healthy lifestyles can greatly impact the quality of life North Carolinians enjoy.
For what had to be the "high note" of the day's activities (sorry about the bad pun) the ALC toured the GILLEY RECORDING STUDIO within the Marian Cannon Hayes School of Music and recorded a stirring rendition of the Appalachian alma mater, then heard our results. Needless to say, the recording engineer had a challenging task to digitally bring the ALC singers into tune using state-of-the-art electronic voice modification equipment.
