Hello from the cool winds of Boone!

Thanks to all the new and returning ALC members who joined us in Boone for the fall 2006 meeting.  We enjoyed a productive weekend filled with beautiful fall weather, good topics and a Mountaineer victory in football!

We have a group photo from the weekend now posted at the ALC page on the alumni website.

We are currently working to schedule a holiday social for all Alumni Leadership Committee members. It will be November 30 at the River Birch Lodge in Winston-Salem. We'll have more details in the next few weeks.

We hope to see you this weekend at Homecoming. Don't forget the complimentary alumni breakfast at the McKinney Alumni Center Saturday morning from 9-10. We will not have a specific ALC presence at the tailgate, but all the ALC Team Members will all be at various locations on Duck Pond Field with our colleges and departments. Rob will be at the alumni tent, which will be the largest tent on Duck Pond Field. He'll be able to direct you to all the campus groups and colleges represented in the largest Homecoming tailgate in school history!

The weather is looking good for the weekend (clear skies, high in mid 60s). You can find more information at www.homecoming.appstate.edu.

Please refer to the ALC website for previous newsletters and follow up e-mails.  These documents tell about the many topics presented to the ALC members at the last six meetings.  If you have any specific topics that you wish to know more about, or any area on campus that you wish to tour, please e-mail Vivien McMahon  mcmahonvl@appstate.edu or any of the ALC Coordinating Team with your thoughts.  We strive to provide the members with interesting topics and tours and your feedback will help us in selecting presentations.

Thanks to all of the ALC members who attended the September meeting.  We appreciate you making the time for this meeting.  Please e-mail us at mcmahonvl@appstate.edu with any thoughts or suggestions on how we can better serve you.

Fall Meeting Recap

Friday tours of Student Rec Center, Rankin Hall

The group met at the Broyhill Inn and rode the ASU bus down to the new Student Recreation Center where Eddie Simmons from University Recreation lead a tour of the new facility located at the corner of Bodenheimer Drive and Rivers Street.  http://www.urec.appstate.edu

Next, the members headed off to the new Rankin Science Building for a presentation led by Dr. Andrew Heckert at the McKinney Geology Museum.   He also discussed plans for a real ‘rock garden’ to be located on the Rivers Street side of the building along the path to the stadium.

The group was treated to dinner on the top floor of the new Library and Information Commons. After supper, members had a few minutes to enjoy the new facility and the beautiful views of campus and Boone from the top floors. They also saw first-hand the rapid progress of the new parking deck located next to the Library on the former site of Whitener Hall.  This deck should open for use before Thanksgiving.

Saturday meetings and tailgate

The ALC met Saturday morning at the McKinney Alumni Center for breakfast and a short business meeting.  Current Alumni Council President Damien Carper ’97 addressed the members about legislative advocacy and how they can become a greater voice for Appalachian State in their community.  Damien also shared about a new e-mail plan for contacting legislators in Raleigh to push for greater State support to Appalachian especially since we rank at the bottom for Full Time Equivalent dollars. If interested in joining this e-mail list, please contact Rob Robertson in the Alumni Office at (828) 262-2203 or via e-mail at robertsonrw@appstate.edu.

After a group photo was taken on the Alumni Center patio the group heard from new Walker College of Business Dean Randy Edwards ’77, ’78. He shared news about the great things happening within the WCOB and introduced Russell Warriner, a student from the Holland Fellows Program. Warriner told the group about his experiences in China with the Holland Fellows Program directly followed by his internship with the China Daily newspaper.

The official meeting adjourned around 11 a.m. Many of the ALC members stopped by the tailgate tent. Congratulations to ALC member Randy Ross ’73 for winning the Jerry Moore signed Appalachian football! We then headed up to The Rock to the watch the Mountaineers defeat Mars Hill, 41-0. It was the first shut out in six years and the 20th consecutive win at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

A Big Thank You
