FALL 2007 ALC MEETING RECAP:

Below is a re-cap of the most recent ALC weekend’s activities…

Friday afternoon, September 14:

The ALC met Friday afternoon at 3pm in the auditorium of the new Belk Library and Information Commons for a short business meeting and to review the agenda for the weekend.  The members introduced themselves and we reviewed the administrative changes within the ALC team and welcomed Lindsay Parker who replaces Rob Robertson.   Note that the ALC website now contains the update roll of all ALC members, including our most recent class.  We also introduced our Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, David Taylor, who joined us for the start of the meeting.

University Police Chief Gunther Doerr presented to the members on Appalachian’s campus and security efforts.  In Chief Doerr’s  PowerPoint, he covered the main duties of his staff.  He talked about many of the crime prevention efforts already in place at the University and some new programs that have been added since spring 2007.  The members asked very good questions and very surprised to learn how much University Police staff accomplishes with so few resources (a common theme across our entire campus!).  For more information, visit  www.police.appstate.edu .

After a short break, Diana Beasley, ASU’s new Teacher Recruitment Coordinator, presented to the group on her efforts attracting students to major in Education at Appalachian.  Diana shared some very interesting statistics about the teacher shortage crisis in North Carolina and methods that the RCOE is proactively working to help solve this challenge.  Click HERE  to view her PowerPoint presentation.

The ALC members and their guests then walked across campus (through the rain) to Welborn Hall and enjoyed a buffet supper in the Chancellor’s Dining Room.  As a side note… we scheduled the supper within this building as it may be the last time that the group could ever eat here as the building is scheduled to be demolished in spring 2008.  For more campus building updates, click HERE. Out the cafeteria windows, the members saw for themselves the new dining facility construction progress.  This new building is located on the spot of the old Broome-Kirk Gymnasium and pool, along Rivers Street.

After supper, the ALC members and their guests enjoyed a very lively and entertaining Steely Pan Band concert in Farthing Auditorium.  The band is made up of students (both Music and non-Music majors) who perform on both home-made and purchased steel drums.  For more information, click HERE

Saturday morning, September 15:

Early Saturday morning, the members gathered at the McKinney Alumni Center for breakfast and a short re-cap meeting.  After breakfast, the group gathered for the 2007-08 ALC photograph, which is now posted on the ALC website.

We then headed to the Holmes Convocation Center as a group for Open House/Family Weekend activities.  According to folks familiar with this event, there was the largest crowd EVER to attend.  There were so many prospective students and their families in attendance, that the start of the assembly was delayed by a half an hour to allow folks to fill the center!  During the presentation, the members witnessed the new ASU recruitment multi-media presentation (which was fantastic!) and then heard the Marching Mountaineers perform.  As a courtesy to the families in the audience during the fight song, the ALC members cheered the “family-friendly” version of Yikas.

After the Assembly, the members then walked back across Rivers Street to the McKinney Alumni Center for the final presentation of the weekend.  Jon Parks, national Alumni Association President presented to the group about his role as Alumni President.  Jon talked about some of the priorities of the newly-formed Board of Visitors and about the legislative advocacy efforts he and others put in place to help the University.  For more information and how you can participate, visit  www.AppalachianAdvocates.com .  Jon also talked about other priorities emerging at the University including special fundraising initiatives.  Discussion then turned to the size of the ASU Foundation endowment.

(As a point of clarification, Greg incorrectly reported the size of the endowment fund to the group.  Click HERE for the most up-to-date figures for the endowment fund)

At approximately 11:10am, the meeting adjourned.  Many of the ALC members then stayed in Boone to watch the Mountaineers defeat a stubborn Lumberjack football team 34-21 later in the day.

Thanks again to all the ALC members who participated in the Fall 2007 meeting!
We look forward to seeing you all again throughout the academic year!
